Les Murray slams Qatar verdict for 2022 World Cup as 'lunacy'
AUSTRALIAN football commentator Les Murray has labelled the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar as "lunacy"
Les Murray, a member of Fifa's ethics committee, also warned of lingering questions about the legitimacy of the bid process and insisted there was collusion between Qatar and a joint bid by Spain and Portugal, competing against England for 2018, despite Fifa's conclusion that there was a lack of evidence. Murray was excluded from last month's ethics committee investigation into the allegation because of his connection to Australia, which secured just one vote in the 2022 contest.
"That Qatar should hold the World Cup is a notion that borders on the ludicrous," Murray said. "If you are going to take the World Cup to new lands, why not take it to Australia? Fifa is in big trouble. Nobody will believe that Qatar won this process legitimately."
