Fox: Radical Overhaul Needed For Defence

A full review of how the MoD is run is being launched in a bid to cut costs and make the department more efficient, the Defence Secretary has announced.

Speaking at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors this morning, Dr Liam Fox emphasised that there would be a structural reform of the department into three pillars – Policy and Strategy, the Armed Forces and Procurement and Estates.

In lambasting the Labour administration’s record over the past 12 years, Dr Fox said that there was a “dangerous deficit” and SDSR would need to address the shortfalls.

He added: “There is an unfunded liability in Defence of around £37 billion over the next ten years – the equipment and support programme makes up over £20 billion of this.

“We need to challenge some of the fundamental assumptions which drive force generation – we need to review our current practices to ensure we are using our greatest asset, which is our people, to the best of their ability.”Read more at www.modoracle.com
