Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan on 20 February

20 Feb 08

It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a Marine from 40 Commando Royal Marines was killed in an explosion in Afghanistan today, 20 February 2008, during Operation Mar Taqeeb (Serpent Pursuit).

The Marines, from the 40 Commando Royal Marines Battlegroup, were taking part in an outreach patrol in Viking vehicles to disrupt enemy forces north of Sangin in the southern Afghan Province of Helmand when they were involved in the explosion.

The Marine was pronounced dead at the scene before he and the injured Marine were evacuated to the ISAF medical facilities at Camp Bastion, where the injured marine received treatment for a minor injury.

The next of kin of all Service personnel involved in the incident have been informed and have requested a period of grace before further details are released.
