Derby Baths, opened in 1939.
Although not up to latest standards, this wonderful pool ought to have been part of Blackpool's legacy to the future by more investment in moving the diving boards to an extension and possibly adding a sister pool so that beginners could swim alongside international athletes. This yard pool was desperate to be converted to metric for the modern competitions, but instead it received the gavel of destruction.
What was Blackpool council response to loosing money in what was an icon of a past era? That of the Taliban in Afghanistan, demolition! This vandalism is being repeated annually as with the small park off Highfield Road where pensioners have been deprived of their Crown Green Bowls area for no other reason than officials and councillor's alike lack the will and the wit to solve a simple dilemma.
As the Australian team train for the 2012 Drug Friendly Gathering in a pool in Manchester, Blackpool residents can only reflect on the demise of the towns prowess because of generations of inadequate governance and prudence by a council unfit for purpose.
