Jacqui Smith wins lucrative jobs with Labour's friends

After throwing her hat into the ring to be the vice-chairman of the BBC Trust on £77,000 for a two-and-a-half-day week, Jacqui Smith has secured two profitable new sinecures.

Mandrake can disclose that she has accepted a job as a consultant for KPMG, which won a highly lucrative contract while she was home secretary.

Smith, who lost her Redditch seat at the general election, is likely to find her KPMG post controversial. Two years ago, she commissioned an expensive study by the firm to report on how the drinks industry enforced its own voluntary codes.

In 2003, Peter Kilfoyle, the former Labour minister, tabled a series of parliamentary questions about his party's links with KPMG, which was said to be involved in more than 90 government contracts, worth at least £12 billion.
