TWO of Blackpool Council's top officers received golden handshakes totalling almost £400,000 after their jobs were axed, it emerged today.

And the authority's latest accounts show the number of its employees earning more than £50,000 a year has soared from 110 to 179. Of those, 98 are teachers.

Payments of £194,747 to executive director of business services Julian Kearsley, and £191,889 to executive director of adult social care Steve Pullan, who both left the council at the end of March, are listed under "compensation for loss of office", the accounts stated.
The entitlements bumped the total payments made to the top eight senior council officers up from just more than £1m in 2008/09 to £1.45m for the last financial year.
Blackpool Council leader Councillor Peter Callow defended the redundancy payments which he said were part of a shake-up of senior management delivering annual savings of more than £1m.

  1. They could save a lot more if the "Coin It In" Callows went;in fact,it would be money well spent to get rid of them, first class travel as usual of course.
